Hannibal to Monroe City

  • Project 100% complete
  • Opened to traffic Aug. 7.
  • Progressive Contractors, Inc., St. Michael, MN
  • Award Cost $17,454,758.14
  • The east exit to Monroe City is permanently closed.

Monroe City to Shelbina

  • Project 60% complete - Weather permitting,

    Shelby County area - Contractor will be working on erosion control maintenance, building temporary connections just east and west of the Salt River, which may require some brief periods of one-way traffic. There will be extra truck traffic entering and leaving the highway. Marion County area - Contractor will be building temporary connections, grading roadway, erosion control and pipe work just west of Monroe City, which may involve some one-way traffic for brief periods. There will be extra truck traffic entering and leaving the highway.

Shelbina to Macon

  • Project 41% complete - Macon and Shelby Counties - Contractor is continuing to install drainage structures at various locations throughout the project.  Construction of the Route 36 bridge over the Middle Fork of Salt River is complete as well as the Route 151 bridge over Route 36.  The Route 36 bridge over Crooked Creek is very near completion and construction of the Route 36 bridge over Route FF has begun.  Earthwork operations continue to move forward.  Additional subcontractor hired for earthwork from Lentner to Shelbina.  Traffic was switched onto the new lanes around Clarence on January 21, 2009 which allows removal and reconstruction of the Route 151 bridge over Route 36.   • 22.5 miles of roadway
  • July 2010 open to traffic; September 2010 completion.
  • Four new lanes will be built around the Hodgin Heights subdivision at Clarence
  • The bridge on Route 151 over Route 36 at Clarence will also be replaced during construction of the project
  • The "Cardinal Connector" was specially designed to allow safe access to and from S. Shelby High School at Route FF.
  • Macon to Clarence – to be built on south side
  • Clarence to Shelbina – to be built on north side

  • Award Cost $32,109,273.54

    Traffic During Construction

    • Access to the highway through at-grade intersections
    • Median openings will be provided at state routes and county roads 
    • Traffic maintained on the existing Route 36 during construction 
    • Temporary side road closures will be required occasionally 
    • MoDOT will make every effort to minimize inconvenience to drivers
     

    Schedule

     

    Cost/Funding

    • Project construction is estimated at $100 million.
    • Partially funded through a half-cent local sales tax in Macon, Shelby, Monroe and Marion counties - this is estimated to fund $43 million of the project
    • $7 million earmark for Route 36 from Congressman Kenny Hulshof
    • The other $50 million of the project (for construction) is being funded by MoDOT.  All other project costs, including engineering, right of way acquisition, survey, etc., are being funded by MoDOT.
